Hard Times Hitting the Disabled People

Disability Benefit Consortium (DBC), a coalition of over 80 UK disability organization, conducted a study on disabled people which showed that over the last 10 years, welfare system changes have left them ten times worse.

The research which focused on finance impact was conducted by Landman Economics, Glasgow University, and East Anglia University.
The research also found out the following:

  • About 50 people who were interviewed stated that they find the application process stressful and they don’t trust the donors.
  • The current system is so complex which have affected the wellbeing of disabled people.
  • Poorly designed assessment and failure to involve disability premiums are some of the reasons which have led to worse conditions.

DBC is calling the government to make urgent improvements, especially during the application process. If the government solve the flows in Universal Credit, then poverty levels will drastically decrease among the disabled. More people will access the long-awaited benefits.
