Caring Charges Leading to Debts for the Disabled

Four out of ten people with disabilities are suffering from bad financial situation according to the research from Independent Living Strategy Group (ILSG). This disabled people can’t afford to have a good meal or proper heating which is affecting their health due to the high cost of caring they have to incur.

According to ILSG, the 152 councils in the UK with the responsibility of social caring are being unfair and undermines their primary purpose for charging the disabled. Of all the 152 councils only Hammersmith and Fulham that does not impose charges to some of its users. Charges are usually an average of about £2,243 per year. Only 17of the 152 councils know the number of people that have rejected the social care packages with is a thing in all the councils mainly due to debts.

In order to charge this, ILSG advises on assessment of their charging policies by all councils, introduce a system to identify people getting into debt early, give time before any debts are collected, and support in debt management.

The group has urged the government to get rid of all charges. In a few weeks, the government is expected to publish a green paper on adult social care funding.
