Stretching nearly 600 kilometers from Mont-Saint-Michel to Le Tréport, the Normandy coast features a variety of accessible beaches. Currently, 12 beaches have received the Handiplage label, with ongoing developments aimed at enhancing accessibility for tourists with reduced mobility in the coming years.

The Handiplage Label in Normandy

The Handiplage certification recognizes beaches equipped with facilities adapted for visitors with limited mobility. The label is awarded at four levels, reflecting the extent of accessible amenities, including equipment for moving on the sand and entering the water, accessible sanitary facilities within 100 meters, and specialized changing rooms.

1- Manche Department:

  • Six Beaches with Level 1 certification: Donville-les-Bains, Surtainville, Sciotot, Gouville-sur-Mer – La Cale Beach and Centre Beach, Le Rozel
  • One Level 2 Beach: Siouville

2- Calvados Department:

Accessibility Devices and Conditions

Many beaches, whether officially labeled or not, offer the Tiralo device, enabling individuals with reduced mobility to access the beach safely. This versatile device can be used on sand or pebbles and requires an accompanying person to ensure safety.

Inclusive Water Activities

The Cherbourg-en-Cotentin sailing school provides accessible sailing experiences for small groups of young people, staffed by trained instructors. Their specially designed group sailing boat can host up to ten individuals with various disabilities. Recognized with the HandiVoile label in 2002, the school promotes inclusive water sports.

Additional Services

The Bédanne nautical base near Rouen offers introductory sailing sessions led by trained instructors specializing in therapeutic sailing for people with disabilities.

Other notable facilities include:

  • Courseulles Sailing School
  • Asnelles Nautical Leisure Centre

Both have been awarded the “Norm’Handi” label for their commitment to welcoming individuals with motor, mental, hearing, or visual disabilities.

Tourism for All in the ‘Coeur de Nacre’ Area

The Calvados-based Coeur de Nacre Tourist Office is dedicated to accessible tourism. Awarded the Accessible Tourism Trophy in 2019 in the tourist information category, the team is actively creating an inventory of accessible services in the region. Their initiatives include:

  • Providing accessible documentation and audio guides
  • Offering free wheelchair rentals at tourist offices
  • Organizing adapted guided tours
