The Autism Song

Autism refers to a developmental disorder that is characterized by problems with social skills, speech, repetitive behaviors and non-verbal communication. However, to Gemma Cooper, it’s a different case. Cooper was diagnosed as being autistic at the age of 9 which affected her development in school. Learning became hard to her as she started regressing and loosing her mastered skills. All she wanted at the time was to just lay in bed at all times.

For years, Cooper learnt by herself how to play different musical instruments. Currently, she is a cornet player in a local band which enhances her social skills. Her mother states that music has played a major role in enabling her to cope up with her disabilities. Recently, Ms Cooper, with the help of her music teacher Mr. Bond, wrote and sang an autism song which has triggered great response from other people with the same condition. According to a research carried out by National Autistic Society, about 79% of the autistic people are socially isolated. Cooper’s story, therefore, acts as an encouragement to them that they can work on their talents which will enhance their social skills.
