Should You Report To Your Boss About Your Disability?

Companies in America are suffering from productivity loss due to misreporting of employee disabilities to their employer. There are many reasons why employees fail to do this however one of the main reasons is that employees with disabilities may be treated differently and may end up losing their job.

It is currently estimated that over 75% of employees suffer from mental illness in the workforce. That is approximately 75 employees out of 100 who have a disability of some sort. This statistic is alarming for employees with disabilities are “suffering in silence” and withholding their condition for personal reasons.

The Americans with Disabilities Act is a policy that requires employers to provide their staff benefits and also help accommodate against disability. Unfortunately, companies do not enforce this thus the final decision is up to the employee.

It is highly recommended that companies recognize the importance of providing a comfortable environment for that staff to openly discuss their disabilities. Failure to do so not only affects the individual but also the organization’s productivity and bottom line.
