The significance of innovative adaptive mobility solutions for fostering inclusivity and independence.

Mike Franz is wearing MagnaReady’s Five Pocket Magnetic Fly jeans.

The Five Pocket Jeans with Magnetic Fly are a recent addition to MagnaReady’s line of adaptive clothing, which employs magnets and Velcro to simplify dressing and clothing management for individuals with impaired hand function. Having previously reviewed a different MagnaReady pant model and been impressed, I was eager to test their new jeans.

Made from soft denim, these jeans feature an elastic waistband for enhanced comfort and flexibility. Instead of a traditional zipper, they use a magnetic closure, complemented by Velcro instead of the typical waistband button.

The magnetic closure worked exceptionally well for me, a C5-C6 quadriplegic with limited dexterity. I simply brought the magnets close enough to connect, and they snapped together effortlessly. To fasten the Velcro, I looped my thumbs through the belt loops and pulled the sides together, with the elastic waistband making the process smoother. Removing the magnets and Velcro was just as straightforward: I pulled the Velcro apart using my thumb through the belt loop on the left, then pushed the magnets apart to detach them.

Inside the JeansFranz found the Velcro and magnetic closures easy to operate and appreciated the reinforced belt loops, which made it easier for his caregiver to pull the pants up. After struggling to close MagnaReady’s Fordham chino pants during a 2022 review, I ordered a larger size based on my own advice. The larger waist fit perfectly, and I experienced no issues connecting the magnets and Velcro. Standing 6’3”, I found the 32” inseam Five Pocket Jeans fit well.

The jeans also feature reinforced loops attached to the waistband to facilitate pulling them up. My caregiver found these loops helpful, and I’m curious to see how they hold up under frequent use.

The Five Pocket Jeans with Magnetic Fly are an excellent choice for individuals seeking greater independence with dressing or those aiming to ease tasks like catheterization. They are priced at $74.99 and are available in 30” and 32” inseams, with waist sizes ranging from 30” to 44”.
